Royivia F.: My love of books starts and stops with fiction. In elementary and middle school, the books I loved the most were coming of age stories and/or anything with angst-y t(w)een protagonists: Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, Absolutely Normal Chaos, Walk Two Moons, and Bloomability by Sharon Creech, Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret and The Fudge Series by Judy Blume, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. As an adult: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (a recent, and instant love), 1984 by George Orwell, which made me fall in love with dystopian novels, The Street by Ann Petry, which is just beautiful and devastating, and The Bluest Eye and Sula by Toni Morrison.
Raisa M.: The Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond series by Sayantani DasGupta, A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza, and The Moor’s Account by Laila Lalami
Deimosa W.B.: Back when I was a teacher, I loved teaching Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. New Kid by Jerry Craft was the book I loved the most in 2019! I love it soooo much. SO MUCH. I championed it to Scholastic Book Fairs last year at book selection, and talked Jerry Craft’s ear off for an hour back in June at ALA, telling him everything that was amazing about it and that it was going to win the Newbery. I have witnesses! I Want To Go Home by Gordon Korman is my favorite Scholastic book, hands down; used to get in trouble in school for laughing out loud while reading Korman’s Bruno & Boots series under my desk; it was super meaningful to me when I later found out he started writing that series as a teen and Scholastic published him at the age of 14. I got these in my Scholastic flyers as a kid in the '80s.
