We can’t believe it has been a year since Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters, a professional resource for K–12 educators, hit bookshelves! Award-winning authors and acclaimed literacy educators Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst opened readers’ eyes to an approach to literacy where reading is framed as transformational, rather than simply a practice of decoding, recalling, and responding to questions. They show that a student’s perception of “reading as simply a set of skills” results in a less-engaged reader.
Since Disrupting Thinking launched last year, we’ve seen countless comments from educators across the country sharing how their thinking has shifted since reading the professional book. In a blog post by Shona Rose, an educator in Amarillo, TX, said, “I'm a fan of strategy teaching. And I have done every single one of these things with my kids. And I teach teachers to do the same. I know you haven't read the setup for the argument that Beers and Probst make [in Disrupting Thinking], but...how I am reading this is changing me.” And we couldn’t agree more!
Kylene and Robert outline a framework they developed called Book, Head, Heart (BHH), which alerts readers to pay attention to the text, their thoughts about it, what they feel, and how they might have changed by reading it.
