The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the United States and the third most visited art museum in the entire world. And from now through May 27, it is also home to some of the most talented student artists and writers from the New York City area.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards: New York City Regional Exhibition features more than 600 works of art and writing by New York City teens who received the highest regional recognition in the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards—the Gold Key Award. If you live in the NYC region or plan to visit before the end of May, this exhibit is definitely not one to miss!
For the fifth year in a row The Met will be hosting the exhibit, which celebrates the creativity and talents of these young artists and writers. Held in the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education on the ground floor of the museum, visitors are invited to wander and explore the many works of art displayed on the walls as well as flip through the many iPads and printed anthologies available for checking out works of poetry, short story, dramatic script, personal memoir and so much more.
But the best part of the exhibit may just be seeing students and their families react to seeing their works in one of the most famous and revered institutions in the world. On any given day, a visitor can stumble upon a student taking a photo in front of their work, or an artist’s family member gazing up at the piece with pride. Not only does this exhibit feature incredible work, but it creates a larger impact that can be felt as you wander the halls of the gallery.
Presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, now in its 96th year, is the longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the United States. Past recipients of the Awards include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Kay WalkingStick, Lena Dunham and Zac Posen, so it’s safe to say that the young artists and writers included in the 2019 exhibit may someday be household names.
