Giveaway: How do you celebrate Earth Day?

It's been 45 years since Earth Day was established, and, amazingly, we're still having conversations about the need to protect our planet.

Those conversations need to start early. I love that Scholastic has resources and activities for kids that can help explain Earth Day and get them involved in hands-on ways. Here are some great ones:

And of course, books are a great way to get kids involved -- because by reading and immersing ourselves into stories, both fiction and nonfiction, we can better understand our planet. Here are some great books about Earth Day from Scholastic Parents, and check out our Earth Day Top Picks here!

To that end...we're hosting an Earth Day giveaway!

THE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE RANDOMLY SELECTED WINNERS: MEGAN M, EMILIA E, AND KEISHAUNA B!

We celebrate Earth Day every

We celebrate Earth Day every year by planting seeds that will grow into vegetables, fruits, and even trees. Most of the vegetable and fruit are grown in recycle containers such as old milk jugs and orange juice cartons. We donate the vegetables and fruit to our local shelter. Having my children participate in this activity shows them how important it is to take care of not only one another, but also mother Earth.

this year, I have started

this year, I have started spreading my love of all things nature. My students are low income and don't have many life experiences or exposure to information on the status of our planet. We have a 4th grade team of students, The Green Team, that picks up recycling objects from each classroom on our campus helps us recycle all of the paper our school goes through. This week, I have done read alouds and used the Earth Day Network's Earth Week curriculum in my class. I am so excited that my kids are asking questions and getting excited about what they can do to help. Spreading it to 20 children means they take it home and share it with others and the information continues to spread through the community. Information--Pay it forward! Love the earth and love doing my part to help it.

Our family celebrates Earth Day all year long! We keep bees and teach and encourage others to keep bees, we have a butterfly nursery running all summer in our house, and we garden, grow, and can/freeze our own produce. When I come back to school every year, I share what we did during the summer with my junior high students and it's a running conversation all year long.
