International museum day: Go “Power Up & Read” at museum sleepovers

Today is International Museum Day!

In celebration of this day, we are annoucing that kids across the nation this summer are going to “Power Up & Read” at their local planetariums.

In partnership with the Scholastic Summer Reading ChallengeAdler Planetarium (Chicago) and California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco), The Smithsonian (Washington D.C.) and the Milwaukee Public Museum (Milwaukee, WI) will host their planetarium sleepovers featuring materials, books and fun activities supporting this year’s free summer reading program.

It’s the perfect summer reading adventure: an once-in-a-lifetime experience paired with the memory of reading an amazing book.

Check out the following events in your area and share your #SummerReading selfies at these events:

MAY

  • The Smithsonian: National Museum of American History “Smithsonian Sleepovers” (Washington, D.C., May 30)

JUNE

JULY

  • The Smithsonian: National Museum of American History “Smithsonian Sleepovers” (Washington, D.C., July 18)

Scholastic will join in on the planetarium overnight fun by providing books including The Magic School Bus: The Electric Field Trip and nonfiction books about science careers and experiments, Scholastic SuperScience magazines and posters, Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge activity sheets, reading certificates and more to encourage kids to read all summer long.

Will your family be attending any of these events? Let us know!

Keep on reading, everyone. We just finished week 2 of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and we have reached over 27 million reading minutes worldwide (and counting). Waa-hoo!
