In 2007, Captain Barrington Irving became the youngest pilot to fly around the world in a single engine airplane. On his incredible 97-day journey, he flew 30,000 miles, set a Guinness World Record, and showed people everywhere that if he could achieve his dream, they could too.
Today, Barrington is not only a pioneer of the skies, but also a pioneer in the education field! We are beyond excited to introduce the new Scholastic “Captain Barrington Irving Expedition Libraries” for the classroom and announce Barrington as the Scholastic STEM Ambassador!
The Captain Barrington Irving Expedition Libraries are literary journeys combined with Barrington’s digital, global flight curriculum—The Flying Classroom. Featuring a mixture of nonfiction and fiction titles, the libraries will take K–8 students on a global “flight” to explore STEM subjects by combining digital adventures with teacher-recommended titles. Each Captain Barrington Irving Expedition features:
- 30 Real-world STEM digital air, water and land adventures
- Opportunities for collaboration, rich discussion and project based learning
- Teacher facilitation guides and professional resources
- Thematically linked titles
Stay tuned… Tomorrow the new STEM Ambassador will be giving our social media followers an inside look at one of his expeditions! In Colorado, he will visit the robotics toy company Sphero and get an up-close look at three of their coolest smartphone-controlled robots.
