Today, our Family and Community Engagement (FACE) team kicks off an exciting summer reading contest… Project Summer is back!
No matter how much high-quality learning takes place during the school year, without continued learning opportunities for all students over the summer, children’s skills can decline. In fact, the latest Kids & Family Reading Report™ from Scholastic revealed that only 48% of parents are aware of the “summer slide” and as many as one in five kids in lower-income families do not read any books at all during the summer.
At Scholastic, we work hard to motivate teachers, educators, and every caring adult to counteract this summer reading loss and instead encourage students to use this time as an opportunity to make a “summer leap” in literacy skills through program such as the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, My Books Summer, and many more.
Last year, we wanted to hear how communities around the country were motivating children to read throughout the summer, so we hosted a “Project Summer” contest where we asked readers to tell us about their summer reading programs for a chance to win free books. And we’re doing it again this year!
We had some great entries from the 2016 contest:
- Kristin from Hickman County, Tennessee shared her plans to incorporate learning programs into community spaces—such as libraries and community theaters—where educators can work with children to nurture their curiosity.
- Katy from Boyd, Texas shared her plans to open the school library during the summer months and have community leaders read aloud and distribute learning packs to prepare students for their next grade levels.

Our Project Summer contest begins on April 24, 2017 and ends on May 15, 2017. For a chance to win 60 FREE My Books Summer books packs, enter the contest by submitting your plan for promoting summer reading in the comments sections below or by posting your summer reading plan on our Facebook page. Please limit your response to 250–500 words.
Three winners will be chosen based on their summer reading plans and will receive summer reading book packs at the organization of the winner’s choice. The winners will be announced at the end of May 2017.
