To help commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, Scholastic is pleased to announce “The Great War,” featuring free classroom lessons, activities, and videos to help students understand the significance of World War I and its enduring impact on our world today.
An initiative of the National WWI Museum and Memorial, these new resources teach global history and help students in grades 5-12 understand the significance of the “war meant to end all wars” while practicing research skills and critical thinking.
A cornerstone of the program are eight dynamic videos that support the lessons. Click here to see them all and start watching!
- The Start of the War— The beginnings of the conflict in Europe
- Life in the Trenches— The harsh realities of fighting in the trenches
- The Global Impact of WWI— The impact around the world, eventually involving over 30 countries
- The U.S. Enters the War— How the U.S. moved from a position of neutrality to joining the war on the side of the Allies
- African Americans in WWI— The experiences of African Americans in the war and the struggle for civil rights
- Women in WWI— How the war transformed women’s roles in society and secured the right to vote
- Innovations of WWI— How the war brought about great advances in science, technology, art, and literature
- From Armistice Day to Veterans Day— How the world came to commemorate WWI and all who have served in any war
