Scholastic Book Fairs #readingsummit recap

This past Tuesday, educators and administrators gathered in Norwood, MA (just outside of Boston) for one of the many Scholastic Book Fairs’ Reading Summits happening this month across the country. This conference introduced many (including myself) the latest data about the importance of independent reading for children.

The day included in-depth workshops from fellow educators and librarians about tactics to engage children, their parents and the larger community about the importance of reading. There were so many amazing moments. A top highlight for me was when keynote speaker, Andrea Davis Pinkney read aloud from her book, The Red Pencil.

Don’t worry if you missed these summits! Donalyn Miller will be hosting webinars this fall titled Open a World of Possible with Donalyn Miller featuring experts in literacy including: Nell K. Duke, Pam Allyn, Ernest Morrell, Anne Cunningham and Kwame Alexander. Mark your calendars!

Check out a few of my favorite quotes from speakers at the conference:

"We need to turn up the enthusiasm for the books we love. We need to BookTalk." - Alan Boyko, President, Scholastic Book Fairs

"Reading a picture book is experiencing 32 pages of joy" - John Schu or famously known as “Mr. Schu” (@MrSchuReads)

Two of my favorite quotes from Donalyn Miller (@donalynbooks):

"No invisible children allowed in the classroom. Help all kids...let's be a book reader leader."

"The best thing we can do when talking about the book our kids love is to stop talking and listen"

And here is a collection of inspiring quotes from author and editor Andrea Davis Pinkney (@AndreaDavisPink). I just could not pick one!

“As an editor, it is my job to hold the flashlight while the authors do the digging”

“You know what it’s like when someone feels small. And you know what to do to raise them up.”

“As a writer it is my job to invite a reader into a reading experience.”
