Election Day is around the corner and this year, kids can make their voices heard! Polls are now open for kids in grades K–12 to participate in the 2016 presidential election through the Scholastic News® Student Vote. This mock-election allows kids across the country to cast their votes for president of the United States online, or through print ballots for Scholastic News magazine subscribers.

Launched during the 1940 presidential election, the Scholastic News Student Vote is a longstanding tradition for Scholastic News classroom magazines. Since Franklin D. Roosevelt and Wendell Willkie went head-to-head in the 40s, kids have voted during every election and the outcomes of the vote have impressively mirrored the outcomes of every general election, except two:
- In 1948, students selected Thomas E. Dewey over Harry S. Truman
- In 1960, students selected Richard M. Nixon over John F. Kennedy
This election year, students will decide between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Republican nominee Donald Trump, or fill in their own third-party candidate to be selected as the next president of the United States.
While they are casting their votes, kids can also check out the free Scholastic News Election 2016 site for age-appropriate news and information about the electoral process. There, they will have the opportunity to learn about the candidates and the democratic process, and read original reports from the campaign trail written by Kid Reporters ages 10–14 in the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps.
