Save the date: on Monday, May 5th, at 9pm EST, book gurus Lori Ess and Betsy Bird will be joining us for a summer reading virtual book swap! They're helping us kick off launch of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge (the biggest summer reading challenge ever, by the way).
The book swap will take place on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page and will last for about one hour. Lori and Betsy will be sharing their recommendations for books within our "Reading Under the Stars" theme—spooky stories, campfire reads, and books about space. We want to hear from you too so be sure to bring your own suggestions! Oh, and expect giveaways of the literary kind.
You can RSVP here! Can't wait to see you there.
In the meantime, here's more about Lori and Betsy.
Lori Ess (pictured left) is the associate director of title presentation at Scholastic Reading Club, responsible for overseeing the creation of classroom promotions and support materials. Before Scholastic, Lori was the Children’s Librarian at the Jackson Heights Community Library in Queens, NY. She loves reading out loud (especially to babies), talking with kids about what they like to read, and alphabetizing.
Betsy Bird (pictured right) is the Youth Materials Specialist for New York Public Library. School Library Journal currently hosts her children's literature blog A Fuse #8 Production. She has reviewed for Kirkus and The New York Times and has written articles for Horn Book Magazine. Her first picture book, Giant Dance Party, was published in 2013 with illustrations by Brandon Dorman. This August her adult title Wild Things: Acts of Mischief in Children's Literature (which she wrote with fellow bloggers Julie Danielson and Peter Sieruta) will be released by Candlewick Press.
