On June 9, approximately 150 Cocke County, Tennessee, students in grades K–7 participating in Save the Children’s summer learning programs at the Edgemont School enjoyed a special literacy event in celebration of summer reading!
Students were able to select their very own free books from Scholastic to take home and add to their home libraries. They also enjoyed a group read aloud.
This book distribution event is part of the free Scholastic Summer Reading program, which, in partnership with Save the Children, has committed to donate a total of 100,000 books to kids in rural America with limited or no access to reading materials. Cocke County, Tennessee, is one of the communities benefitting from this national donation.
Since the start of the Scholastic Summer Reading program on April 26, kids around the country have been starting and keeping Reading Streaks™ to help unlock the book donation.
Providing year-round access to books is key for helping students accelerate their learning and prepare for the school year ahead. According to findings from the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™, 94% of parents agree that reading books over the summer will help their child during the school year, and according to the Scholastic Teacher & Principal School Report, educators overwhelmingly agree (99%), reading books for fun supports students’ academic success.
