Superstition says Friday the 13th is an unlucky day filled with fear. What better day to read some scary books?
I love a good thrill -- whether it's movies, scary televisions shows, or amazing books that keep me up late, afraid of every noise I hear. When I feel like being frightened, I turn to classics like The Dollhouse Murders by Betty Ren Wright or new titles like The Diviners by Libba Bray. And I'm not alone -- I asked the other OOMers what their favorite scary books are, and it's a great mix of new and old titles!
Lia: My all-time favorites were (and probably still are!) Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hann, and The Dollhouse Murders and Christina’s Ghost by Betty Ren Wright. Can’t tell you how many times I checked those out of the library…
Emma: Definitely Frankenstein! I never wanted to do a science experiment again after reading it!
Nadia: I don’t have a favorite – I was always too scared to read scary books growing up (I still am!). I was terrified of the Goosebumps books when I was young, so last year I finally conquered my fear and read my first R. L. Stine book, The Haunted Mask. I’ve also recently read Her Evil Twin from the Poison Apple series – my 11-year-old neighbor recommend it. I was reading it on the subway, and I have to admit, I was a bit jumpy!
Brittany: My favorite scary book is more of a murder mystery thriller: Still Life with Crows by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Very violent, very creepy, very awesome.
Tyler: I really liked Salem’s Lot by Stephen King!
