Designing your own professional development (and a giveaway!)

As former Oregon teacher of the year Steve Wyborney reminds us in his recent blog post, teachers are in charge of their own professional learning and growth. We must seize opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and mentors and continually seek answers to the burning questions we have about teaching and learning.

Participating in professional learning communities, performing action research, taking classes, reading professional books and articles, interacting with teachers on social media—these are all wonderful ways for educators to gather new ideas, refine teaching practices, and receive support and feedback. In addition to these valuable activities, don’t neglect attending local education conferences.

At statewide or regional events, you’ll have the opportunity to hear nationally recognized speakers share the latest thinking on current educational topics. You’ll also get to choose from a wide array of breakout sessions, some of which are nearly guaranteed to address the questions you are currently wrestling with. As you tailor your conference experience to your interests, you’ll meet like-minded teachers from around your state, exchanging ideas and insights and building your professional network.

While you’re there, be sure to

●Check out the book signings. Picture book authors and illustrators often attend conferences to promote their work, as do professional book authors—you might get a chance to take a picture with your favorite writer or ask them a question!

●Scope out the exhibit hall. Many exhibitors offer freebies to teachers, and there are usually great discounts on books and other materials.

●Attend social events. Often organizations will host receptions, poetry readings, pizza nights—any number of events to foster community among participants.

When you return home to your school, you’ll have a wealth of information, materials, and ideas to share along with new connections to tap when the next burning question is keeping you up at night.

I am a long-term substitute

I am a long-term substitute teacher and the opportunity to attend conferences is limited. I would love to attend the MRA later this month! Such great speakers lined up...particularly interested in hearing Donalyn Miller, Teri Lesesne, Colby Sharp and Alan Sitomer.

As a first year teacher, I am

As a first year teacher, I am most excited to learn about how I can make ELA as engaging and exciting for my 8th graders as possible while still sticking to the curriculum I am given. I have gone to the conference before as a student volunteer, and I would love to go as a teacher, taking advantage of all of the sessions offered!

By attending Michigan's

By attending Michigan's reading conference I know I will walk away with renewed passion and many new ideas to implement. It is hard to pinpoint to just one "take away" because everything I plan to attend will be so beneficial!

I am looking forward to

I am looking forward to networking with authors and teachers in my field. I am hoping to learn a variety of reading and writing strategies.

As I am about half-way

As I am about half-way through my masters in Literacy Education (GVSU Detroit Campus), I would be very excited to attend the Michigan Reading conference to explore the resources I have become more aware of through my coursework, while also gaining ideas to bring back to my current 3rd grade students, and carry with me into my future teaching.

I'd love to attend the

I'd love to attend the Michigan Reading Conference. I'd love to hear about ways to incorporate books more into my preschool classroom - instead of just reading, but doing an entire lesson around a book.

I want to attend Michigan

I want to attend Michigan Reading!! I am a first year teacher and am looking for ways to ignite a true desire in my students for reading! I LOVE books and it makes me so sad to see so many kids who would rather do anything than pick up a book. Thank you so much for offering this opportunity.

I would love to attend the

I would love to attend the Michigan Reading Conference. I teach secondary English, and we, as secondary English teachers, don't get much reading instruction in our degree programs. I think we need to focus on the dying love of reading that happens in the middle and upper grades. I want strategies to make challenging texts accessible to my students in ways that will help them fall back in love with reading. Please make this happen for my students and I.

I would like to learn about

I would like to learn about researched based strategies and ideas so that I can share them with my building. I would also like some fresh ideas on formative assessment.

Back from the leave of

Back from the leave of absence I took to birth and care for my son, I expected to attend the MRA Conference in Grand Rapids the way I used to each spring. Sadly, money is too tight in our district. I remember feeling recharged and inspired to use my new knowledge and creativity to revise my curriculum upon returning from Grand Rapids. I feel like a new teacher again and could really use the support from the knowledgeable speakers and the new colleagues I would meet. I am especially interested in Sonja Cherry-Paul's expertise about teaching middle schoolers to construct meaning using text-based evidence. MRA always made me smile, laugh and relax a lot. I miss it!

I am a second grade teacher

I am a second grade teacher and believe that developing strong reading skills in my students is essential to their future success. I am always looking for new ways to meet my student’s diverse reading needs, both by teaching them to enjoy reading and helping them to develop the skills needed to succeed. I think that the Maryland IRA Council Conference would provide a wonderful opportunity to learn about new reading strategies and to network with other teachers to share ideas. I have always found it helpful to hear about what has (and hasn't) worked for other teachers. If I am able to attend the conference, I can share the strategies that I learn with other staff at my school, as well as my classmates in the Reading Specialist master's degree program at the University of Maryland.

EVERYTHING! MRA Conference

EVERYTHING! MRA Conference offers awesome professional development with passionate people, and opportunity to learn wonderful new ideas, which I can use immediately to support my students in developing a life long love for literacy.

This will be my first MRA

This will be my first MRA conference, and I am very excited! I am in a new teaching position as a Reading Specialist this school year, and I am looking forward to learning as much as possible to bring back to my classroom. I want to show my students how reading can change their lives!

After reading both of her

After reading both of her books, I would be most excited to hear Donalyn Miller speak at the conference!

I have loved be able to

I have loved be able to attend the Michigan Reading Conference in the past. I love meeting others who are as excited about teaching reading as I am. I would love to have another opportunity to attend!
